Information about the Alaskan Malamute: The Alaskan Malamute is a large breed of dog and member of the Spitz group – which are are a type of dog generally characterized by long, thick, and often white fur, and pointed ears and muzzles. The tails of these dogs are very distinctive as they are usually curled over the dog’s back. Malamutes are commonly used to pull sleds and haul loads in the cold, snowy wastes of Alaska. While they do look similar to the Siberian Husky, they are very different dogs with distinctive personalities, anatomy and size. Their names come from a tribe of Inuit that lived in the upper western areas of Alaska. Their names were the Mahlemut. The dogs were used for a variety of purposes, such as hunting, pulling large loads, sledding and protection. It is the official state dog of Alaska.
