Information about the Giant Stag Beetle: The Giant Stag Beetle – also called the Elephant Stag Beetle is a large member of the order of Coleoptera, usually dark brown or red-brown in color. These beetles are generally found in the woodlands of North America ranging from Virginia and North Carolina to the northeastern United States. The males of the species have elongated mandibles that are used to battle rival males for breeding rights. Females have typical beetle-like jaws. Size is variable and ranges from 1 to 1-1/2 inches. The larvae of the beetle develop in damp, decaying wood. Adults are also be found near stumps or rotting logs. Both males and females have difficulty getting upright if overturned because of their top-heavy heads and flattened backs.
