Cranes of the World Poster Cranes are large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds from the family Gruidae. These birds are known for their distinctive trumpet calls, elaborate mating dances, and monogamous pair bonds. There are 15 species found on every continent – except Antarctica/South America. They prefer wetlands and grasslands where they feed on plants, insects, and small animals. Crane migrate long distances and can be identified when doing so by their with extended necks and legs. While the population of most of the species are stable, some of them – notably endangered with only roughly 800 individuals living as of 2026 – face threats from habitat loss and hunting.
