Description Ajrakh, is a unique form of block printing practised by the local communities in the desert region of Kutch in Gujarat. The double sided block printed textile still sticks to its tradition of mainly using Red & Blue colours with geometric pattern designs. Ajrakh is one of the earliest forms of block-printed textile in the world and historic records date it back to the Harappan Civilisation around 4000 years ago. Currently, Ajrakh is practiced in Sindh in Pakistan, Ajrakhpur and Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat, and Barmer in Rajasthan. Ajrakh is a very demanding and laborious form of cloth-printing and resist dyeing. To get the desired result from the resist dyeing, lime is used as an adhesive, which is an indicator of the special skills of the artisan. Ajrakh designs, in terms of variety and arrangements, are limited. Indigo and madder are the primary colours that are used for dyeing. Ajrakh can be printed as single sided and double sided.
