Information about the African Fish Eagle: The African Fish Eagle – also called the African Sea Eagle – is a large species of eagle that found throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa, usually near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply. As a result of its large range, it is known in many languages. This bird of prey has a wingspan of nearly 8 feet (2.4 meters.) As the name makes clear, it feeds primarily on fish which it will catch by swooping down on the water’s surface a grabbing the fish with it’s formidable talons. It will also prey on other birds, turtles, lizards and even newly born crocodiles. It is the national bird of Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Sudan. There is an estimated wild population of about 300,000 birds.
