Information about the Bluegill: The Bluegill fish – sometimes called bream, brim, or copper nose – is a species of freshwater fish native to lakes, ponds, streams and marshes of North America, generally found east of the Rocky Mountains (although it has been deliberately introduced into many areas it is not native to, including Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceana. It has even been found in some brackish water such as Chesapeake Bay as the fish can tolerate a low level of saltwater. These fish are very popular with sportsmen and women, and millions are caught every year. In turn, sometimes the Bluegill itself is used for bait when fishing for larger fish such as catfish and Largemouth Bass. It is the official state fish of Illinois.
