Dear website visitor, on this page you will find many articles about the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, such as the breed standard but also a lot of information about the health of the breed. Because today the idea with us breeders is that people want to buy a dog that becomes at least one hundred years old and never be sick, I can assure you that this is a utopia. The average age of a dog is ten or eleven years but just like with us people, there are dogs that die earlier, or later. Everybody has a story about a dog they once knew that became 18 years old and has never was sick for a day, these are the exceptions to the rule!
Any dog can get sick just like any human can, there are diseases that are easy to solve by a pill but there are also diseases that are absolutely not to be solved or prevent, a very famous and instantly the number one killer in both man and dog is cancer. An other, well known disease is the terrible phenomenon "epilepsy", there are even some breeds where it occurs more in common with other breeds, which we than call "breed-related". Now the breed Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a relatively healthy breed, comparing with some other breeds. Of course, a Pembroke can get all dog illnesses that are known also, "nothing canine is the Pembroke strange", but really breed-related diseases aren't that many and the ones that are more common to the breed Pembroke (or were) are clearly identified and named. The breeding conditions of the breed but also the integrity and competence of the breeder (I speak in this for myself and not on behalf of other Pembroke breeders!) ar being followed up by clubbreeding rules etc. So I breed "to the best of my ability", to what lies in my power, sound, character typical Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
Nevertheless, dogs bred by my hand can become sick aswell and can get all diseases known also, you, the future puppiebuyer should know this accordingly. You can read all about the known diseases such as; eye diseases (EVCO) HD (OFA and RvB) DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) but also the less known and common diseases (by George Jones) on this page. For a number of matters, relating to the health control, I work with a contract drawn up by lawyers office Bonefaas in the Netherlands, an example of this agreement is to be read on this page ( only in Dutch because it's made up under Dutch law ).
As one also may have read on this website, I invite serious buyers for a Pembroke Welsh Corgi always on an "intake" interview and an introduction to me and my Pembroke's, during this visit, I tell, uninvited, all about this matters, which may still insufficiently known to the visitor so that they leave the kennel with all the information needed to know about the common and less common diseases and disorders in the breed and all the ins and outs on the purchase agreement.
